Chapter Fifteen

“Soooo, I guess you and Nance are probably going to have some kind of couples costume?” Justin asked. “Another Star Trek thing or something?”

It was Wednesday morning, and Alfred had taken the most circuitous route he could think of to the coffee pot. And yet, despite his best efforts, Lyon still found him. “Not this time.”

“Really?” Justin arched an eyebrow. “No couples costume at all? Or just not Star Trek?”

“No couples costume.”

“Really?” the other man repeated, a touch too interestedly. “Honeymoon phase wearing off, then?” He laughed lightly, as if he didn’t mean it.

Alfred frowned at him, because he knew he did.

“I’m just kidding you. I mean, honestly, it’s kind of a relief. You two were a little over the top.” He laughed again. “I’m just saying, there’ll be a lot fewer turned stomachs is all.”

“Not with you around,” the taxman muttered under his breath.

“What?”

“Wouldn’t want to do that.”

“Oh. Right. Well, anyway, what I wanted to tell you is, Stacey got off from work. So she’s going to be here Friday. And we are doing a couple’s thing. I’m her big bad wolf, and she’s my sexy little red riding hood.”

Alfred rolled his eyes. He didn’t mean to. The expression just came out before he could stop it. Justin didn’t seem to notice, though. He was too busy grinning stupidly. So the taxman mustered his best, “Great. Sounds great.”

“Oh yeah. It’s a hot little number, too. And it really works for her, especially since we started eating healthier, you know? I mean, she’s always been smoking. But now?” He shook his head and loosed a sigh.

Alfred rolled his eyes again. “Great.”

“So, uh, what are you two doing? Other than nothing together? You’re going as like some kind of Greek or something, right?”

“An Atlantean.”

“So a fake Greek.” He smirked. “What’s Nance doing?”

“Not sure…she hasn’t told me yet.”

Justin raised an eyebrow. “Oh. Geez, I didn’t realize things were like that between you two. Sorry, Freddie. I wouldn’t be going on and on about my perfect relationship and hot girlfriend if I knew things were so bad. You should have told me.” He tapped his chest, and then placed a hand on Alfred’s shoulder. “I’m your pack, remember?”

The taxman swatted his hand away. “It’s not…we’re not…everything’s fine, Justin. It’s just a surprise. She’s got some kind of Lord of the Rings thing going on, and she’s got me guessing.”

“Oh.” There was no mistaking the disappointment in the other man’s tone. “Well, I guess that’s Nance, right? Little bit of a flair for the dramatic, and all that. Some girls like that kind of attention.” He laughed, but there wasn’t much pleasure in his tone. Apparently, he still wasn’t over his disappointment that things were just fine between Alfred and Nancy.

“Some people just know how to have fun with the person they love,” he shot back.

“Right.” Justin glanced skeptically at him, then tapped his own forehead. “But, hey, that’s looking much better. I can barely see the bruise anymore.” Then, he put another hand on Alfred’s shoulder.
